Collis launches student involvement blog

McOmber said she decided to create the blog after a suggestion from her supervisor Juli Coombs, the Collis Center program coordinator. McOmber operates the blog on her own from the Center offices on the third floor of Collis. The blog content thus far has primarily been centered on spotlights of various Council on Student Organizations groups.

One aim of the blog is “to bring information and awareness to the student body of the unique ways to get involved on campus,” McOmber said in her introductory post.

After emailing all of the COSO groups, McOmber said she received numerous enthusiastic responses and has since written three posts, highlighting the groups Collis After Dark, She’s the First, and Dartmouth Emergency Medical Services. A post about the Dartmouth Animal Welfare Group is forthcoming. Each post includes a list of the group officers, its mission, how to become involved in the organization, recent and upcoming events and who to contact if interested in joining.

Due to her uncertainty concerning how many viewers have visited the blog since its launch, McOmber said she is unsure how successful she has been in spreading the word about her blog’s existence.

In addition to emailing the link to the Collis Center offices and to all COSO organizations, McOmber created a Facebook group, which shares the links to her posts and includes over 800 members. The blog has also been advertised on the television above the Collis information desk and the bulletin boards outside Collis Cafe.

A similar initiative began under last winter’s intern, who started a website that covered information on all of the groups Collis oversees, including COSO, the Council on Class Officers, Collis Governing Board, the Dartmouth Outing Club, One Wheelock, Student Assembly and Programming Board. The website has not yet been updated since the end of last winter term. However, McOmber is optimistic about the future of her blog, hoping that the winter intern can sustain its progress.

“Hopefully, the blog will gain more notoriety, providing a way for the COSO groups to get information out,” McOmber said.
