Track teams take third and sixth at Ivy Heps

The Dartmouth men's and women's track and field teams experienced mixed results at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships over the weekend in Ithaca, N.Y. Several members of the women's team finished in the top two spots in their events, helping to bring their team a third-place finish with 73 points, while the men's team ended the weekend in sixth place overall.

One of the Big Green's most notable accomplishments at Heps over the weekend was its performance in the women's pentathalon. Dartmouth athletes Janae Dunchack '14 and Priscilla Trojano '12 took first and second place in the event, respectively. Lauren Ready '15 finishing 11th and Alexandra Nee '12 took 14th.

Abbey D'Agostino '14 also showed off her skill in the women's mile run, finishing in second place at 4:52.47 during trials on Saturday.

She stepped up her game to an even higher level during the finals, leaving all of her opponents in the dust as she swept the 10 first-place points for the Big Green, ending her mile in 4:46.81.

The Dartmouth women also recorded several second-place results, including D'Agostino in the 5,000-meter run finals, Alexi Pappas '12 in the 3,000-meter run finals and Emmaline Berg '13 in the shot put finals.

Christina Alexander '12 also placed in the shot put finals, taking fourth and earning four points for the Big Green.

Women's captain Chrissy Supino '12 said the team was excited about its performance over the weekend.

"The girls' team did great," she said. "It just shows how all the different events came together. It really took everyone to make that happen."

John Bleday '14 led the Big Green men, single-handedly earning nearly half of the team's points with his first-place finish in the men's 3,000-meter run finals. Bleday completed the race in 8:11.30. Brad Kenimer '12 also competed in the 3,000-meter run for Dartmouth, finishing seventh in 8:23.70.

Co-captain Ethan Shaw '12 said Bleday's performance was the best race of the day.

"John Bleday's winning performance was a huge highlight, and the [Distance Medley Relay] he anchored, they all put together a huge performance," he said.

Other highlights for the Big Green men included their fourth place finishes in the 60-meter dash finals and men's distance medley finals.

Connor Reilly '13 completed the 60-meter dash in just 6.85 seconds, good for fifth place. The medley team, consisting of Henry Sterling '14, Jalil Bishop '14, Joseph Woiwode '14 and Bleday finished the race in 9:54.51.

Bleday said the Big Green men were not particularly happy with their performance.

"In general, for the men's team, it was a disappointment, I would say," Bleday said. "In a lot of places we were seeded higher than we finished, which is not a good thing. Our sixth place was definitely a drop from last year."

Both the men's and women's teams are now gearing up for their next race, the Last Chance Meet, which will be held in New York this coming Friday and Saturday.

Supino said the girls' relay teams have high hopes for this meet.

"For the past couple of weeks, we've been in the top 12, and the top 12 go to Nationals for the DMR," she said. "Our primary concern is to solidify our spot in Nationals."
