Big Green student-athletes make ECAC All-Academic team

Nineteen players from the men's team and 14 athletes on the women's team made the ECAC All-Academic team.

The All-Academic teams selected a total of 189 male and 138 female student-athletes representing all 12 programs in ECAC hockey. To qualify, a player must earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale or have a GPA of 3.00 over the past three semesters.

Both Dartmouth teams placed a relatively high number of athletes in comparison to the other 11 schools in the conference. The Big Green women's team is tied for second with Quinnipiac University, trailing only Yale University, which placed 19 athletes on the list.

On the men's side, Brown University and Quinnipiac led the way with 23 honorees each, followed by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with 22. Dartmouth, Union University and Yale tied for fourth with 16 each.

Of the 19 men's hockey players selected, 10 were three and four-year honorees. Two seniors on the team , Evan Stephens '11 and Scott Fleming '11, received the honor during each year of their four years at Dartmouth.

Stephens said that juggling hockey and academics at the same time can be difficult, but he also found that the balance helped him manage his time effectively.

"It helps me budget my time so I know when I have to study," Stephens said. "It kind of forces me to get things done when they need to be, otherwise I'll miss deadlines."

Players named to the team for the third time include Kyle Reeds '11, Matt Reber '11, Joe Stejskal '11, Nick Walsh '12, Paul Lee '12, Doug Jones '12 and Troy Mattila '12. In addition, Adam Estoclet '11, Jim Gaudet '12, Kyle Schussler '12 and Alex Goodship '13 each made the team for the second time.

The newcomers to the list are Matthew Lindblad '14, Cab Morris '14, Nick Lovejoy '14, Kevin McCarthy '11, Jody O'Neill '12 and Rob Smith '10.

Of the 189 male student-athletes selected for the All-Academic team, 112 playerswere also honored last year, and 71 have been honored for the past three years in a row.

On the women's side, 80 out of 138 honorees were also named to the team last year and 47 have the distinction of receiving the honor each of the last three seasons.

Five Dartmouth women Jenna Hobeika '12, Katie Horner '11, Larissa Roche '11, Alyssa Boehm '11 and Moira Scanlon '12 are on the All-Academic team for the third year straight.

Lisa Berreman '13, Erica Dobos '12, Margaux Sharp '13 and and Jessica Gagner '13 were named to the team for the second year in a row. Five skaters made the team for the first time, including Brittany Mills '12, Lindsay Holdcroft '14, Sally Komarek 13, Sasha Nanji '13 and Ali Winkel '14.

"It's definitely not easy, but if you manage your time, you can make it work," Boehm said. "Hard work pays off."

Like any Dartmouth student, these athletes need to be on top of their academic game. Student-athletes, however, tend to have a disadvantage because of their busy sports schedules.

"The times when it gets hard is road trips because we left on Thursday, so we would miss two to three classes on Friday," Stephens said.

Men's coach Bob Gaudet and women's coach Mark Hudak both stress the idea that academics should be student-athletes' priority. Guadet did a good job of adjusting practices and lifts for his team's ever-complicated academic schedules, according to Stephens.

"[Gaudet] made sure we put school first when were weren't at the rink," Stephens said. "But while at the rink, he demanded full attention to hockey."

Both men's and women's teams have their own academic advisors who help athletes with academic questions.
