The Big Green won three of four events on the first day of competition, including the men's and women's 10-kilometer freestyle races and the women's slalom event.
Four women's alpine skiers ranked in the top 10 in the slalom race. Annie Rendall '13 finished first with a time of 1:33.76, followed closely by Courtney Hammond '11, who finished third in 1:34.01.
"Both events went really well for us slalom and giant slalom," alpine skier Kelsey Roddick '11 said. "It was exciting because we haven't been performing in the past few carnivals so it was fun to see it in the results."
The Big Green was even more successful on the Nordic course on the first day, when five women's skiers finished in the top eight and four men finished in the top six in their respective events.
Eric Packer '12 and Nils Koon s'11 swept first and second place in the men's 10-kilometer freestyle with times of 24:37.4 and 24:40.0, respectively. Erika Flowers '12 finished first in the women's 10-kilometer freestyle race with a time of 28:44.5, followed by Rosie Brennan '11, who placed third in 29:14.9.
Dartmouth continued to perform well on Saturday, when the Big Green placed second in the women's giant slalom event and three-by-three relay and first in the men's three-by-three relay.
Hammond and Rendall placed second and third, respectively, in the giant slalom. The relay team of Brennan, Flowers and Stephanie Crocker '12 finished second in the three-by-three relay.
Dartmouth raced particularly well in the men's three-by-three relay, dominating its competition.
The team of Koons, Packer and Sam Tarling '13 finished first with a time of 26:05.3, crushing the second-place UVM team by 47.1 seconds.
Another Dartmouth relay team consisting of Scott Lacy '13, Gordon Vermeer '12 and Erik Fagerstrom '14 finished third in the event with a time of 27:12.7, helping bring Dartmouth its overall victory in the event.
"Tactically, the relay went really well," Koons said. "Everyone skied a pretty relaxed race until the last lap where we were able to open up a gap and widen it until the end."
Dartmouth's weakest area at the carnival was the men's alpine races, and the team failed to crack the top three in either the men's slalom or giant slalom events.
Trevor Leafe '12 led the Big Green in the slalom event with an 11th-place time of 1:34.33, while Peter Ankeny '12 followed 0.61 seconds behind in 17th place. Leafe was also Dartmouth's top finisher in the giant slalom competition, placing ninth with a time of 2:01.40. Mathieu Bertrand '14 finished in 16th place for Dartmouth, with a time of 2:02.36.
Men's alpine head coach Peter Dodge acknowledged that the men's alpine team has failed to match the overall team's performance. "We've continued to have some problems with our top performers," he said. "If we're going to continue to beat UVM we're going to need the men's team to step up."
Dartmouth will race next weekend in the Bates Carnival in Rumford, Maine and the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association Championships in Bethel, Maine.
