Short Answer

As Fieldstock approaches, what are your expectations for the summer's "Big Weekend"? Will it live up to the hype? Or will the fledgling tradition straggle behind its beloved and historic forebears?

Just like everything else over sophomore summer, Fieldstock is going to be more mellow and low-key. But, also like every other aspect of sophomore summer, it will have a bit of magic attached to it. Tom Mandel '11

I expect that some students will not partake in Fieldstock events this weekend in defiance of the crackdown on Fieldstock's predecessor, Tubestock. Besides this mild resistance, the weekend can and probably will play out like any other "big weekend" at Dartmouth: more parties and spaces for students to come together, more events, more "I love Dartmouth" statuses on Facebook. It will act as this term's celebration of Dartmouth College.

Fieldstock is shaping up to be a solid contender for the cornerstone of sophomore summer. Because our class is the first to never have gotten a glimpse of the mythical Tubestock, our expectations include little besides an excuse to hang out hard and compete in wacky sports on the Green. Every "big weekend" involves finding an excuse to drink. Homecoming's excuse is the bonfire and the presence of alums taking a walk down memory lane (with a detour onto alcoholism boulevard). Winter Carnival's excuse is a few skiing matches and a snow sculpture. Green Key's excuse isum...well, anywayBut Fieldstock seems like a hacked-up last minute excuse, an attempt to replace something totally awesome Tubestock with something kind of mundane. I feel like our generation never has the chance to get a big bang out of anything magical or old-fashioned or mildly-unsafe, despite all of our electronic amenities and jaded ways. Life should be a little more enchanting.Sam Buntz '11

Sophomore summer isn't a dramatic change from any other weekend during sophomore summer; there's no influx of alumni, giant burning sculpture to run around, or unusually big parties. My expectations are low and almost completely center around nice weather and slow river currents. Spenser Mestel '11

I dont see any reason why Fieldstock wouldn't live up to the romanticized ideals of the other great college weekends, mostly because the other weekends don't set that high a standard. Winter Carnival is just a weekend full of silly day activities followed by a series of raucous nights and, in the case of Green Key Weekend, there aren't even that many day activities. Fieldstock isn't shaping up to be that much different, and we should not expect it to be. We're just far more interested in nightlife. Chris Talamo '11

In the midst of a busy and fun-filled sophomore summer, I think our young Fieldstock tradition will be much more low-key than other established big weekends, but no less fun for those involved. Isaiah Berg '11
