Fischer will travel to Calgary on August 7, to compete for one of 22 spots on the team, which competes in Ravensburg, Germany this January in the 2010 MLP Cup, an annual tournament that Canada has won six times in the past seven years. The team will also play a series of three games against the Canadian National Women's team, composed of older players with more training.

Fischer, who began playing hockey in preschool, said she is looking forward to participating in the camp.

"Some girls' dreams, growing up playing hockey, is to one day represent their country," Fischer said in an interview with The Dartmouth. "This is kind of the start of it for me, so that's obviously one of the most exciting things." In addition to being named Rookie of the Year in 2009, Fischer led Big Green freshmen women in both points and goals with 26 and 15, respectively. She also scored four game-winning goals over the course of the season more than any other player on the team.

According to Mark Hudak, head coach of the Dartmouth women's hockey team, Fischer's contributions extend beyond the goals she scores.

"[Fischer] certainly put up some points for us last year as a freshman, but I think that one of her real strengths is that she is a playmaker. She makes other people around her better," he said.

Teammate Geneva Kliman '12 said Fischer's intelligent mode of playing is one of her key strengths.

"She's a smart, heads up player," Kilman said. "She sees the ice very well and I always feel confident that she will do something intelligent and productive when she gets the puck."

Fischer said she hopes hockey smarts will earn her a spot on the U-22 team.

Hudak said that while the competition is difficult, Reagan's chances to make the team are as good as any of the other candidates.

Hudak said his experience as a coach for the American U-22 team gives him an understanding of the process.

"You're going to have four or five players that really stand out, and those are definite U-22 players who will probably play on the Olympic team someday," Hudak said. "And then you have a group of players after that. It's splitting hairs and it's dependent on what the coach is looking for it's dependent on positions. So I think she's got as good a chance as anybody else that's there, and then it's really up to those individual coaches and what they're looking for."

Fischer also said she expects to face difficult competition.

The 19-year-old Fischer is one of the younger players slated to attend the camp, and she said it will be challenging to compete against older, more experienced players.

This is the second time that Fischer has participated in the Canadian U-22 system. She attended a U-22 strength, conditioning and skating camp in May. Her performance there along with evaluations done by Hockey Canada's scouts and the National Women's Team coaching staff during this past season led to her selection for this August's camp.

Fischer said she believes that trying out for the U-22 will allow her to learn more about "what Hockey Canada's expectations are, versus what Dartmouth's expectations are."

"They're a little bit different training programs so [I hope to] just learn a little bit more about what they're expecting for the future," Fischer said.

Hudak said he thinks that the experience will be a good one for both Fischer and for the rest of the team, because he has noticed that players who attend national camps are often invigorated with a new level of intensity.

"They're able to bring a lot of that back to the team ... and I think [it] can be really helpful to the other people on the team," he said.

Fischer said she hopes that her participation in the Canadian U-22 camp is just the beginning of her participation on Canadian national hockey teams.
