To the Editor:
Regarding the Editorial Board's recent piece ("Let's Put it to a Vote," May 22), one guesses that there will not be another election for alumni trustees until a full year from now. Awaiting the results of the alumni governance amendment might have been a justification for not proceeding this past spring with an open election to replace alumni trustee Michael Chu '68, but can anyone explain the Board's inconsistency of maintaining the freeze on Board seats to retain both Chu and Russell Carson '65 past the end of their terms, while at the same time proceeding to unfreeze positions for other trustees, conducting Board elections this spring in which one trustee seat was vacated?
Much has been made of outside groups influencing the alumni choice of trustee nominees through aggressive campaign tactics. Whenever the next election does occur, alumni should cast a wary eye on the extent to which the Alumni Relations arm of the College crosses the line from supporting to controlling how elections are conducted. Therein lie the truly significant resources that consolidate power.Tim Dreisbach '71S. Royalton, Vt.
