Baseball, softball split doubleheaders with Cornell in Ivy League championships

Scoring a total of 20 runs, the Dartmouth baseball team went 1-1 in the first day of the Ivy League championship against Cornell. Meanwhile, in Ithaca, N.Y., the Dartmouth softball team recovered from a 4-0 loss to the Big Red in the first game of the Ivy championship to beat Cornell 5-1. Both teams will play third series games tomorrow in the hopes of gaining their respective Ivy League crowns.

After fighting back in the first game with an explosive seven-run fifth inning to win 8-6, the Big Green baseball team then lost the second game to the Big Red 14-12.

With a 12-10 lead entering into the seventh inning in game two, Big Green closer Ryan Smith '11 gave up a three-run home run to the first batter he faced, whose hit nicked the top of the centerfield fence.

Dartmouth never recovered from the homer, as a late ninth-inning rally attempt fell short when Nick Santomauro '10 struck out looking for the last out of the game. Jeff Onstott '11 was left stranded on first base.

"We wanted to come out here and win two, but we knew Cornell was going to show up and give us two really tough games," co-captain Robert Young '10 said after the game. "We're going to go in and find out the things that we did wrong and come out tomorrow ready to play game three."

The Big Green returns to the diamond tomorrow in Hanover for the third and deciding game of the championship series. Kyle Hendricks '12 will be the starting pitcher for Dartmouth, according to head coach Bob Whalen.

Dartmouth's softball team, also facing Cornell for the Ivy championship, cruised to a 5-1 victory buoyed by a three-run fourth inning in game two. The win forced a third game to determine the Ivy title.

Devin Lindsey '11 went the distance in the circle for the Big Green in game two, striking out six and walking one while giving up six hits and one earned run.

In the first game of the afternoon, Cornell sophomore pitcher Elizabeth Dalrymple silenced the Big Green bats in a complete game shutout. She gave up four hits and struck out seven.

Hillary Barker '12 took the loss for the Big Green in game one. Barker gave up nine hits and walked two, giving up four runs.

Baseball will face Cornell at 1 p.m. Sunday at Red Rolfe Field in Hanover for the decisive third game of the series. Softball, meanwhile, will face off against the Big Red for the Ivy League crown at 12:30 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y., looking to win the school's first-ever softball championship.
