Lord to become president of Naropa University

Associate Provost and former Dean of the Tucker Foundation Stuart Lord will become president of Naropa University in Boulder, Colo., beginning July 1, the College announced Wednesday. The College's press release did not specify when Lord will leave the College.

Lord was named Virginia Rice Kelsey dean of Tucker, an endowed position, when he came to the College in 2000, and also served as associate provost.

In August 2008, College Provost Barry Scherr announced that Lord would leave his position at Tucker to assume expanded responsibilities within the Provost's Office. College Chaplain Richard Crocker has since filled the Tucker dean position.

Lord told The Dartmouth at that time that he had enjoyed working at the Tucker Foundation but wanted to assume "broader" responsibilities at the College, and had been discussing expanding his role within the Provosts' Office for several years. Lord added that the new position would allow him to "work strategically" with different parts of campus, and particularly pointed to plans to develop and manage the office's diversity plans, which were due for revision.

In an interview with The Dartmouth in August 2008, Diana Pearson, Dartmouth's vice president of communications, said she was unaware of any contractual issues associated with Lord's change in position.

As Tucker dean, Lord oversaw Tucker's religious and volunteer programs, according to a College press release. New initiatives started under Lord's tenure include the Cross-Cultural Education and Service Program, which deals with services in Nicaragua, and Project Bangladesh, which assisted an orphanage suffering from damages caused by a flood, the release states.

Lord also oversaw a rise in the Foundation's endowment from $8 million to over $21 million during his tenure, according to the release.

Lord will be Naropa University's fifth president, according to the university's web site. He will replace current president Thomas Coburn, who announced in May 2008 that he was stepping down after serving for six years, the web site states.
