Secretary of State Hillary Clinton officially named Stephen Bosworth '61 special envoy to North Korea, the Associated Press reported Thursday. As special envoy, Bosworth will represent the United States in six-party talks aimed at resolving the international conflict surrounding North Korea's production of nuclear weapons, according to media reports. Bosworth, a former chairman of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees, served as U.S. ambassador to the Philippines and Tunisia during the 1980s. Clinton made the announcement while visiting Seoul, South Korea, in her first official trip abroad, the AP reported.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic, the group physician practice associated with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, signed a nonbinding letter of intent to pursue formal affiliation with Catholic Medical Center on Wednesday, WMUR reported. The hospitals will share governance and management, but will maintain their respective identities, Alyson Pitman Giles, president and CEO of CMC, said in an interview with WMUR. The hospitals offer many of the same services, refer patients to one another and can cut costs through the merger, WMUR reported. The affiliation would also give DHMC a location in Manchester, New Hampshire's largest city. DHMC and CMC have been working together since 2004, and DHMC's Norris Cotton Cancer Center opened a branch at CMC earlier this month. If the affiliation receives state and federal approval, it will go into effect at the beginning of 2010.

Harvard University has announced that it will raise tuition by 3.5 percent and may halt plans to expand into Boston's Allston neighborhood as a result of endowment losses, Bloomberg reported. Harvard's tuition will be $33,696 for the 2009-2010 academic year. Dartmouth previously announced a tuition increase of 4.8 percent for next year, raising the cost from $36,915 to $38,445. Harvard's endowment had declined by 22 percent as of Oct. 31, and the university has been forced to offer buyouts to 1,600 non-faculty staff members to reduce costs, Bloomberg said. Harvard also announced that it will reevaluate plans for a new biological engineering science center, part of the Allston expansion.
