What if Peaches and Mike D had a lovechild? Biggie Smalls is the godfather. Darby Crash is the cousin. It might be a stretch, but this is how Scream Club, the female duo who will be performing at Friday Night Rock's Pride Week concert, describes their music.
Cindy Wonderful and Sarah Adorable -- together known as Scream Club -- will perform with local outfit Razorbloodz in the FNR show to kick off Pride Week.
FNR spokesperson Hayley Kennedy '08 is excited to see her group collaborating with others for Pride Week.
"We want to decorate and have sparkles and colors and ribbons," Kennedy said. "It's going to be really awesome to be working with the other groups on campus." Kennedy is a member of The Dartmouth staff.
After meeting in a porn shop in Olympia, Wash., Wonderful and Adorable began a romantic relationship. Six months later Scream Club was born.
Over the last five years, Scream Club has garnered notable attention from aficionados of a progressive and underground hip-hop scene. According to their MySpace.com profile, Scream Club's members are "two cultured and reckless, freaky white chicks," who are "stopping hearts all over the world with their own unique blend of electro-hip-pop-punk-rock-feminist-glam-rap."
Scream Club shows are frequently theatrical and encourage audience participation in a variety of ways. At a recent show in Olympia, they encouraged audience members to double dutch during their set.
Their songs range from upbeat, undulating and energizing tracks that go from the metal-like "I'm Going Crazy" to the almost old-school-sounding and stealthily romantic "And You Belong to Me."
Scream Club has been involved in the queer hip-scene through annual events such as the Peace Out Fest -- New York City's annual LGBTQ hip-hop festival -- but their music, which draws on diverse influences including Prince, Kate Bush and 50 Cent, is not possessed by a single demographic. According to a May 2006 interview posted on disheveledmag.com, Scream Club's audience contains a mix of sexualities and genders, and their shows are danceable and energetic.
On-campus band Razorbloodz will be performing along with Scream Club. Comprised of DJ Tanner and DJ Playschool -- Kristen Vallacher '08 and Carmen Kilpatrick '09, respectively -- Razorbloodz began as a joke during the late fall of 2007.
The pair began writing during the interim between Fall and Winter term and formed in earnest in winter 2008, and recently garnered attention in the blogosphere.
The group's electrified sound coupled with their distant vocal style and funny, anecdotal songs such as "Roe vs. Wade" should complement Scream Club well.
Kennedy is especially excited to see how the younger band Razorbloodz will perform with well-established Scream Club.
"Opening up for a larger band is what FNR is supposed to be about," Kennedy said.
At a recent show during Dimensions weekend on the Collis Porch, Razorbloodz drew a fairly large crowd. Although some prospective students fled during the sexually suggestive "2g1c," which refers to the now infamous "Two Girls One Cup" (if you don't know, this isn't the place to tell you), the performance was well-received and provided an edgy and refreshing soundtrack to the afternoon.
Scream Club and Razorbloodz will perfom at 10:00 p.m. at Fuel. Doors open at 9:30 p.m.
