SA candidates use and abuse media, aesthetics in campaigns

It's a very, very serious year in Student Assembly politics. Pressing issues on our candidate's agendas include: providing staples at Greenprint stations (Lee Cooper '09)and making dining facillities "more conducive to social interaction" (Molly Bode '09).

Both our candidates seem to know that the media is a politician's best friend, but Cooper hasn't abandoned man's best friend: Cooper's campaign video, posted on YouTube, begins with a shot of hm petting two fraternity dogs by a roaring fire.

Bode has yet to stoop to such hokey comedy and seems determined to take the high road, despite her Facebook group and auto-replies, which claim she "Bodes well" for the Dartmouth campus. As for her posters, Bode's name and platform appear somewhere in the corners while her flowing, snowflake-dappled hair and attractive smile take center stage. Well played, Molly.

Cooper's posters, meanwhile, invoke the iconic image of the rebel Che Guevara. This time, however, Che wears a tee-shirt with a picture of Lee. Though he's got the creative edge, Cooper's message ("The leadership we crave") has even less substance than Bode's snowflake-fest.

With less than a week to go before the elections, all bets are off. Will the wholesome Bode prevail? Or can Cooper's YouTube video overcome her lead in Facebook groupies? Time will tell.
