Dartmouth's baseball team remains atop the Ivy League standings after a win and a loss in non-conference competition this week.
The Big Green (18-11, 10-2 Ivy) could not protect its 6-1 lead against Vermont (15-11, 3-1 America East) on Tuesday in Burlington, Vt. A four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth by the Catamounts sent the game into extra innings in which UVM scored with one out in the bottom of the tenth, sealing an 8-7 victory.
Dartmouth rebounded from the loss, however, defeating Holy Cross (15-20, 7-5 Patriot) at home on Wednesday.
Erik Bell '08 broke the game wide open with a grand slam over the right centerfield fence in the sixth inning, and the Big Green walked away with an 11-5 win.
Damon Wright '08 and Nick Santomauro '10 also connected for their seventh and fifth home runs of the year, respectively.
Dartmouth will take on Ivy rival Yale (16-19-1, 7-4 Ivy) in a four-game series in Hanover this weekend. The Bulldogs trail Dartmouth by 2.5 games in the Rolfe division standings after splitting a series with Harvard (4-26, 3-9 Ivy) last weekend.
The Crimson, who entered last weekend's series averaging just over four runs per game, was able to put up 21 runs in total in two victories over Yale.
The Big Green took three of four games against Brown (14-18, 5-7 Ivy) last weekend, enabling Dartmouth to gain ground over Yale in the Rolfe division standings.
In the Gehrig Division, Columbia (13-21, 8-4 Ivy) remains in first place after winning two games against Princeton (14-18, 6-6 Ivy) last weekend. Columbia hopes to protect its first-place spot, taking on last cellar-dweller Cornell (10-19, 4-8 Ivy) this weekend. Princeton will host the University of Pennsylvania (13-16-1, 4-7 Ivy) for the weekend.
Men's Lacrosse
Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team secured its first Ivy League win of the season against Yale, 17-14, at Scully-Fahey Field on Wednesday night .
The Big Green (5-6, 1-3 Ivy) lead comfortably at halftime, 11-5, but Yale (3-8, 0-5 Ivy) was able to make two strong charges in the second half, coming within two goals of Dartmouth and finishing just three points behind the Big Green.
The victory brings Dartmouth out of the cellar in the Ancient Eight standings, leaving Yale and Harvard (4-7, 0-4 Ivy) tied for last place.
Ari Sussman '10 and Brian Koch '09 lead the Big Green on Wednesday, chipping in five points each, including four goals for Koch. A season-high ten players scored goals for Dartmouth.
The Big Green kept Yale under constant pressure throughout the first half, but eased up in the opening minutes of the second half and let Yale back into the game with 4-0 run less than 10 minutes into the third period, bringing the score to 11-9.
Dartmouth responded with a 6-1 run starting the final three minutes of the third period.
Yale mounted another 4-0 run to end the game but ultimately fell short.
Cornell (9-2, 4-0 Ivy) and Brown (9-2, 4-0 Ivy) are currently tied for first place in the Ancient Eight, and Princeton (6-4, 3-0 Ivy) follows in third. The Big Red will take on the Tigers this weekend.
Dartmouth will take on non-conference opponent No. 4 University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., this Saturday.
Softball
After winning three of four games against Brown last weekend, Dartmouth softball nears a .500 record in Ivy League play.
The Big Green (9-20, 5-7 Ivy) stands in second place in the North Division of the Ivy League, trailing Harvard (18-15, 9-3 Ivy), which is currently on an 11-game winning streak.
Princeton (15-19, 12-0 Ivy), undefeated in Ancient Eight play, are in first place in the South Division.
Two Big Green players were awarded with Ivy League honors this week. Freshman pitcher Devin Lindsay '11 was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week and catcher Leigha Clarkson '10 was placed on the Ivy League honor roll.
Lindsay earned two wins in the four games against Brown last weekend, pitching a total of 12 innings and shutting out the Bears in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Clarkson, playing with an injured finger, had five hits and two RBIs in the four games, including a home run.
Dartmouth will face off against Yale (13-19, 2-10 Ivy) this weekend in back-to-back doubleheaders in Hanover. Yale is in third place in the North Division, three games behind Dartmouth.
Women's Tennis
The Dartmouth women's tennis team will finish its season this week with away matches against Brown and Yale on Friday and Saturday. The Big Green will end the season with a final home match against Harvard on Wednesday.
After the team's losses last weekend to No. 65 University of Pennsylvania (9-7, 4-1 Ivy) and Princeton (10-8, 3-2 Ivy), Dartmouth (14-3, 2-2 Ivy) fell out of national rankings.
The Big Green will need to win all three of its last matches -- which would include an upset of Yale (9-8, 5-0 Ivy) -- if it hopes to garner the Ivy League title.
Penn and Princeton's weekend successes pushed the teams to second and third in Ivy League standing, respectively.
Dartmouth sits in the fourth slot in conference standings alongside Harvard (2-14, 2-2 Ivy), which the Big Green will face on Wednesday.
Despite its conference losses, Dartmouth still boasts the highest overall win percentage in the Ancient Eight with .824. Harvard holds the lowest with a win percentage of .125.
Columbia (2-13, 0-5 Ivy) holds the second-lowest win percentage, with .133. Columbia lies at the bottom of the Ancient Eight standings.
Following an eight-game winning streak in non-conference matches, Brown (10-8, 1-4 Ivy) was unable to secure an Ivy League win until last weekend. The Bears put an end to its losing streak last Saturday, defeating the Lions 7-0.
Women's Lacrosse
Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team defeated Harvard 11-7 on Wednesday, giving the team its second conference win of the season. The Big Green (6-6, 2-4 Ivy) is now ahead of the Crimson (7-6, 1-4 Ivy) in conference standings, taking the sixth spot in the Ivy League rankings.
Co-captain Kristen Barry '08 led the Big Green in scoring with four goals. Barry was followed by Cate Goytisolo '10 with two goals and an assist and Eliza Bennett '10 with two goals. Shannie MacKenzie '11, Colleen Olsen '10 and Kat Collins '11 each scored one goal, and Greta Meyer '11 posted an assist.
Goalkeeper Julie Wadland '10 also posted a strong performance, making ten saves and picking up three groundballs.
Though Harvard outshot Dartmouth 24-19, the Big Green dominated draw-controls, beating out the Crimson 16-5.
The Big Green was down 4-2 in the first half, but the team rallied with a five unanswered goals that spanned over the halftime break.
The series of goals put Dartmouth ahead 7-4, and though the teams alternated goals for the remainder of the game, Dartmouth held its advantage to take the victory.
The University of Pennsylvania (11-1, 6-0 Ivy) won at least a share of the conference title by defeating Princeton (10-1, 4-1 Ivy) 9-5 on Wednesday.
Yale, which defeated fifth-place Brown (5-7, 2-3 Ivy) 12-4 on Wednesday, is in third place in the conference, just ahead of Cornell (8-4, 3-2 Ivy).
Columbia (3-9, 0-6 Ivy) is in last place in Ivy League standings. The Lions suffered a 10-9 loss to Fairfield on Wednesday.
Dartmouth will face No. 2 Princeton in New Jersey this Saturday in the Big Green's final league game.
Crew
Dartmouth's women's rowing team dropped a tough race in Derby, Conn., last weekend to Yale and Boston University. Yale finished the race at the top of the season's first Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges coaches' poll. Dartmouth was ranked eighth, and Boston University was ranked sixth.
Dartmouth's women's crew will head to Boston this Saturday to take on No. 4 Radcliffe, Notre Dame and the University of Southern California. Rounding out the top 10 of the coaches' poll this week are Brown, Northeastern, the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell and Columbia.
The heavyweight men will also look to rebound this weekend after losing a tough race to Yale this week.
This weekend Dartmouth's heavyweight crew will travel to New Brunswick, N.J., to race BU -- a team looking to recover after a loss to Northeastern -- and Rutgers, who will host the race.
Harvard's heavyweight crew will compete against Princeton and Massachusetts Institute of Technology this weekend. Harvard looks to recover from a five-second loss to Brown last weekend, and Princeton hopes to continue its strong performance after victories over Columbia and Penn.
Dartmouth's men's lightweight rowing team is coming off of a three-second victory against Delaware last Saturday.
The Big Green lightweight crew will travel to Cambridge, Mass., to take on Harvard and MIT in the Biglin Bowl this weekend.
Princeton's men's lightweights will compete against Rutgers and Cornell, while Yale's crew will host Columbia and Penn in the Dodge Cup, before facing off against Cornell.
Men's Tennis
With a victory over Princeton (9-9, 1-4 Ivy) last weekend, Dartmouth's men's tennis team (6-9, 1-3 Ivy) has vaulted themselves out of the cellar of Ancient Eight standings.
In sixth place in the Ivy League, the Big Green will look to improve its record in two crucial conference matches this weekend.
The team will play second-place Brown (10-12, 3-1 Ivy)in Hanover on Friday, before traveling to New Haven, Conn., on Sunday to battle fifth-place Yale (7-8, 2-2 Ivy).
Dartmouth will finish its Ivy League season against top-ranked Harvard (12-6, 4-0 Ivy) on Wednesday.
Harvard continued its Ivy success last weekend, giving up only one team point to stay atop the league with an unblemished record. The Crimson will play Brown (10-12, 3-1 Ivy) on Sunday, in a contest that could determine this year's Ivy champion.
The University of Pennsylvania (12-9, 3-2 Ivy), in third place in the Ivy League, dropped in the rankings after splitting the weekend.
Each Ancient Eight team has a maximum of three matches left in the season, and all of the contests will be played by next Wednesday. Dartmouth needs to perform well this weekend in order to avoid ending the season at the bottom of the Ivy League.
Track and Field
Dartmouth's men and women's track and field team has opened the outdoor track season with successful performances. Last weekend, the men's squad finished in first in the Brown Invitational while the women finished the meet in second place.
Brian Evans '08 won both the 200-meter and 100-meter races while Tyler Koskenoja '07 took the javelin throw and Andrew Ching '10 finished in first in the high jump.
For the women, Caitlin Cunningham '09 won the women's 3000-meter race and Jessica Long '08 took the women's hammer throw.
This year's team is one of the strongest the Big Green has fielded in recent years. Men's coach Barry Harwick and women's coach Sandra Ford-Centonze expect the teams will be successful at the Heptagonals, the Ivy League championship meet, in May.
The Big Green will host the University of New Hampshire, University of Vermont, Tufts and Middlebury in Hanover this Saturday in the first of Dartmouth's two home meets.
Golf
The men's golf team traveled to Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence, R.I., to compete in the New England Division One men's golf championship last weekend. The Big Green finished in fifth place out of the 13-team field.
Davis Mullany '10 was the low scorer for the Big Green, shooting a 75-72-147, three over par, to finish in a tie for fourth place individually.
The Big Green men's team will compete in the 54-hole Ivy League men's golf championship in Galloway, N.J., this weekend.
The team will look to improve its recent performances and hopes for a better result than last year's sixth place finish.
The women's golf team will also travel to New Jersey to compete in the Ivy League Women's Golf Championship.
The tournament will take place at the Atlantic City Country Club in Atlantic City on Saturday and Sunday. The Big Green will play 36 holes on Saturday and a final round of 18 on Sunday.
Last season, the women's squad finished in sixth place in the tournament.
