Dartmouth (5-7, 1-3 Ivy) got a much-needed conference victory against Yale (4-8, 0-5 Ivy) last week, winning 17-14. The Big Green will now take on Ivy League leader No. 10 Princeton Saturday in Hanover.
Most of the Ancient Eight took a week off from conference play last weekend, instead facing non-conference foes to strengthen their chances for at-large NCAA tournament berths.
The only league game played last week was between No. 8 Cornell (9-3, 4-1 Ivy) and Princeton in Princeton, N.J. Entering the contest, the Big Red and the Tigers were tied with No. 18 Brown (10-2, 4-0 Ivy) for first place in the Ivy League. Princeton won the contest, 11-7, to take sole possession of first place. The Tigers' victory could have an impact on NCAA tournament selections.
The Big Green took on No. 3 University of Virginia, losing 11-7 last Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.
Both Brown and Harvard (5-7, 0-4 Ivy) picked up wins last weekend. Brown held off in-state rival Providence, winning 11-9, at home, while Harvard dispatched Holy Cross, 12-6 in Worcester, Mass.
The University of Pennsylvania (5-6, 3-3 Ivy), which ended its Ivy season two weekends ago with a loss to Brown, fell to No. 8 Maryland, 9-4, in College Park, Md.
Women's Lacrosse
Dartmouth (7-7, 2-4 Ivy) fell to No. 8 Boston University, 15-10, this past Wednesday at home, after falling five goals behind the Terriers early in the contest.
Notable performances for the Big Green included four goals by Cate Goytisolo '10 and three by Kat Collins '11. Greta Meyer '11 put in two goals, and co-captain Kristen Barry '08 had a goal and an assist against BU (14-2, 6-0 America East).
The loss does not affect Dartmouth's standing in the Ivy League. The Big Green is in fifth place in the Ancient Eight, behind No. 4 University of Pennsylvania (12-1, 7-0 Ivy), No. 6 Princeton (10-2, 4-2 Ivy), No. 15 Cornell (9-5, 4-2 Ivy) and No. 16 Yale (11-5, 4-3 Ivy).
Tied in the sixth spot are Harvard (8-6, 2-4 Ivy) and Brown (6-8, 2-4 Ivy). Columbia (4-10, 0-7 Ivy) brings up the rear, winless in league play.
Only two contests remain in conference play this season. This Saturday, Princeton will play Brown in Providence, R.I., and Cornell will take on Harvard in Cambridge, Mass. Upsets by Harvard or Brown would push these teams into a tie for fifth with Dartmouth.
With its upset win against Princeton, the Big Green rounded out its Ivy season. Dartmouth will face Stanford (8-8-3-2 MPSF) at home this Sunday, and finish out the season against No. 11 Duke (9-6, 3-2 ACC) the next day in Hanover.
Men's Tennis
Dartmouth's men's tennis team lost its season finale on Wednesday against Harvard, 7-0, in Cambridge, Mass. With only one win in conference play, Dartmouth (6-12, 1-6 Ivy)is now in seventh place in the final standings, tied with Princeton (9-11, 1-6 Ivy) in the Ancient Eight.
With the win, Harvard (15-6, 7-0 Ivy) caps off a perfect Ivy season to clinch the Ivy League championship, its first since 2004.
Brown (12-13, 5-2 Ivy) beat Yale yesterday in Providence, R.I, in a dominant 6-1 performance, securing a tie for second place with Columbia (10-6, 5-2 Ivy). Brown was denied the opportunity for its third Ivy League title in four years after a loss to the Crimson last weekend.
Rounding out the standings, Penn (12-11, 3-4 Ivy), Yale (8-10, 3-4 Ivy) and Cornell finished in a three-way tie for the third place spot.
Women's Tennis
Dartmouth (16-4, 4-3 Ivy) finished the season in fourth place in the Ivy League, following a close loss to the Ivy champions Yale (11-8, 7-0 Ivy) last Sunday at home and a victory in the Big Green's final Ivy match against Harvard (2-17, 2-5 Ivy) on Wednesday in Hanover.
The Big Green finished with three 4-3 scores last week, defeating Brown (11-9, 2-5 Ivy) last Friday in Providence, R.I., before 4-3 finishes against Yale and Harvard.
With the two wins, Dartmouth was able to finish with its first winning conference record since the 1999-2000 season. The Ivy record is also an impressive turnaround from its performance in conference matches last season, when the team was unable to garner a single Ivy League win. The team finished with an unimpressive record, 7-12, 0-7 Ivy after the Big Green dropped the last 11 games of the season.
This season, Yale earned the Ivy League title and a shot at the NCAA championships following a hard won match against Dartmouth. A loss to the Big Green would have forced Yale to a playoff against the University of Pennsylvania (11-7, 6-1 Ivy) for the championship title.
Columbia (2-15, 0-7 Ivy) finished at the bottom of the Ancient Eight.
Harvard finishes with a tie for fifth place with Cornell (9-7, 2-5 Ivy).
Softball
After taking two of four from Yale (17-24, 4-12 Ivy) last weekend, Dartmouth (11-23, 7-9 Ivy) remains in second place in the North Division of the Ivy League, trailing Harvard (21-18, 12-4 Ivy) by five games.
Dartmouth is scheduled to play four games against the Crimson this weekend in a home-and-home doubleheader series, starting Saturday in Cambridge, Mass. But even a sweep of the Crimson would leave Dartmouth one game short of first place in the division.
Cornell (37-7, 15-1 Ivy) recently fought back from second place in the South Division of the Ivy League to tie Princeton (20-21, 15-1 Ivy) for first place. The Big Red leads all Ivies in overall win percentage, .841, and is currently on a 20-game win steak.
In non-conference play, the Big Green lost to Boston College, 7-3, Wednesday in Hanover. The game was scoreless through 3.5 innings, until the Big Green got on the board when Leigha Clarkson '10 doubled to drive in Katie Chifcian '09.
But Boston College's Taylor Peyto responded, hitting a grand slam to left field in the fifth.
The Big Green was unable to regain the lead from the Eagles, who managed to tack on three more runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Crew
Dartmouth's lightweight crew has a tough weekend ahead, as the Big Green welcomes top-ranked Yale and Rutgers to Hanover for the Durand Cup this Saturday on the Connecticut River before heading down to New York City on Sunday to take on Columbia in the Subin Bowl.
In the first Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges poll, the Big Green varsity eight boat is ranked No. 5. Yale currently has the top-ranked varsity eight boat, with Navy and Princeton rounding out the top three. Columbia, is currently ranked seventh.
Dartmouth women's crew jumped up two spots to sixth in this week's Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges coaches' poll. Last weekend saw Dartmouth lose a tough race to No. 4 Radcliffe, but the Big Green notched victories against Notre Dame and Gonzaga in the Charles River Challenge in Boston, Mass.
The Dartmouth women have a chance to make advance in the rankings this Saturday, when they host second-ranked Princeton and the seventh-ranked University of Pennsylvania on the Connecticut.
The top five women's crews in the coaches' poll remained unchanged this week, with first-ranked Yale followed by Brown in third and Northeastern at fifth. Boston University, Cornell and Columbia round out the top ten.
Dartmouth's heavyweight team will attempt to rebound from last week's losses to Rutgers and Boston University in New Brunswick, N.J., as the crew heads to Providence, R.I. to face top-ranked Brown in the Atalanta Cup Saturday.
The first heavyweight rankings of the season put Dartmouth at No. 16 nationally. Wisconsin, Harvard, Princeton, and University of California, Berkeley follow Brown at the top of the rankings.
Sailing
Two Dartmouth sailors -- Becca Dellenbaugh '10 and Sarah Johnston '09 -- were named to the All New England women's team this past weekend, coming off a strong season and a solid showing at the women's New England championships last Saturday and Sunday in New Haven, Conn.
Despite the honors, Dartmouth's sixth-place finish left the Big Green one place out of the running to advance to the ICSA Women's National Championships in late May. Only two points separated the Big Green from fifth-place Boston University.
In the Central Series at Massachusetts Institute of Technology last weekend, Big Green sailing squads took second and third place, finishing behind BU boats. The boat of Matthew Cohen '10 and Christina Clark '10 finished in second, while skipper Ben Bier '10 and crew Heidi Heller '10 finished in third place, beating another BU boat by one point.
Dartmouth sailing had considerably less success at two other regattas last weekend.
The Big Green finished in 14th place at the Thompson Trophy at Connecticut College and in 19th place at the United States Merchant Marine Academy's Admiral's Cup.
Dartmouth sailing will host both the Northern Series and the Professor Noringer regatta this weekend, the Big Green's final races on the spring.
