To the Editor:
In light of recent discussion surrounding the return of Beta Theta Pi to Dartmouth, I'd like to clarify that Alpha Xi Delta does not oppose Beta's reoccupation of its house. We are aware of Beta's long history at Dartmouth and understand its desire to return to campus.
Furthermore, we have had an excellent working relationship with the Beta Alumni Corporation throughout our stay at 6 Webster Ave., and will continue to maintain our relationship as we make the transition to a new location.
We do share the concern of many students regarding the implications that our relocation has for the future of campus gender dynamics, and we are committed to promoting parity between male and female-dominated social spaces on campus.
These concerns, however, are entirely separate from our relationship with Beta.
In the spring of last year we began discussions with the Office of Residential Life regarding housing solutions for the future. Upon receiving the news last Wednesday that Beta would most likely be returning to campus in the fall of 2008, our sisterhood has been actively seeking out more immediate options.
Yesterday Dean Crady confirmed the College's commitment to creating more social space on campus, and I am excited to work corroboratively with both administrators and other students towards this end.
