SEC clarifies its position

To the Editor:

I want to clarify that, while Shala Byers '07 is a member of the Senior Executive Committee, her op-ed ("The Merit of Meritocracy," May 10) does NOT represent the views of the SEC or its decision-making processes regarding class marshals, class historians and class orator as a whole.

Byers' idea that only "[t]hose who were chosen for the positions of class marshals, historians and orator were chosen because their merits, skills and contributions to the College deserved recognition" is her own and not how the SEC functions: We do not advocate for a color-blind meritocracy.

The various and diverse ways people "represent" and "contribute" to the College were a focal point of our internal discussions. Although people may disagree with our choices, we want everyone to know that diversity was and is an important issue to the SEC.
