I'd just like to briefly acquaint you with my platform for Student Assembly president and my eligibility as a candidate. My agenda for Student Assembly is very clear: I want to turn Student Assembly into less of a political organization by changing its focus to pay more attention to student services.
The student government at Dartmouth can, and should, be much more efficient at serving students, rather than being an agency that people want to have included on their resume while enjoying meetings with free food and assessing their own well-being. Student Assembly should enhance the Dartmouth experience for all students. I feel that the real capital of our college experience, more important than what we learn from books, is in what I like to call "cognitive interactions." Student Assembly, as it now stands, neither facilitates any discussion programs that encompass the entire campus and the issues students face, nor does it try to lose its exclusivity.
I believe that Student Assembly does not currently serve as a union for all Dartmouth students in the manner that it can, and I plan to make Student Assembly representative of students, and not just its members.
Agenda:
**Introduce a Safe Ride system.
**Improve work-study wages.
**Increase the ability to NRO classes by eliminating out-of-bounds courses for non-majors.
**Create all-night student eating options.
**Better represent Greek Houses in Student Assembly.
**Create an Emergency Fund (If students run out of all financial resources, Student Assembly will support them from the emergency fund).
**Create an advisory system for students facing Committee on Standards (COS) hearings.
**Give free tickets to students going to watch away games.
**Make Dick's House hours more accessible, especially during sophomore summer and interims.
**Make Student Assembly a student-oriented organization.
Dartmouth is at its best when each and very student has the best experience possible -- that's what I'll strive to provide as Student Assembly president. If you have any ideas that are sympathetic with mine or can build upon the kind of change I'm aiming for, I'd love to talk to you about them.
With your help and support, we can take the initiative and actually use Student Assembly to make Dartmouth better. Thank you for your time.
