Big Green men's hockey routs RPI, upended by Union

With the team entering the midpoint of the season and looking to make a run in the ECAC, the Dartmouth men's ice hockey team came away from a New York road trip with a 4-1 loss to Union on Friday and a 6-2 win against RPI Saturday evening.

The weekend split puts the Big Green at 6-7-2 overall and 5-5-2 in the ECACHL, moving Dartmouth into second place in the league standings, behind Quinnipiac.

Captain Tanner Glass '07 said that the team does not feel a greater sense of urgency to win to put the Big Green in a position for the playoffs. "Our focus is on each individual game right now," he said. "We know that if we focus on achieving smaller goals we'll be in good position for the playoff run."

On Friday, two power play goals propelled Union (9-9-2, 2-6-0 ECACHL) past the Big Green, who had not yielded a goal off a man advantage for two games, for the Dutchmen's first victory over Dartmouth in three games. Lane Caffaro put the Dutchmen on the board with seven minutes left in the first period with a shot to goaltender Mike Devine's '08 glove side.

Leading 2-1 in the third period, Olivier Bouchard wristed a shot from the left circle into the net past a sprawling Devine to give Union a two-goal cushion with 16:20 elapsed in the frame. An empty net goal finished off the scoring for the Dutchmen.

J.T. Wyman '08 gave Dartmouth its lone tally of the game later in the first period. David Jones' '08 initial shot careened off the pads of Union goalie Justin Mrazek and came out to Wyman, who redirected the puck past Mrazek's stick into the net. Glass also received an assist on the play.

The Big Green' own power play woes continued against the Dutchmen, as Dartmouth went 0-9 in extra man situations to increase its power play scoreless streak to 48 opportunities after the loss.

Dartmouth rebounded with a scoring display against RPI (5-9-6, 1-7-0 ECACHL), with the Big Green depositing four goals in the first period. The squad also tallied four power play goals, ending its streak of scoreless power plays at six games.

"We just really focused on execution and sticking with our game plan," Glass said of Dartmouth's success on the power play. "When you go through a bit of a slump, it's important that everyone stays committed and together. We did that, and against RPI it finally paid off for us."

Forward T.J. Galiardi '10 and Jones led the Big Green with two goals each, including a strike from Galiardi just 57 seconds into the game. After defenseman Grant Lewis '07 cleared the Dartmouth defensive zone and moved the puck forward to Nick Johnson '08, Galiardi came streaking down the right side and fired a shot up high to register the first goal of the game.

Galiardi scored later in the frame, notching Dartmouth's second power play goal of the contest to put the Big Green ahead 4-0. Mike Hartwick '07 set up the goal with a pass from the blue line, receiving his first point of the season in the process.

Jones netted two power play goals against the Engineers, connecting off assists from Glass and Ben Lovejoy '06 with 11:28 elapsed in the first period to put Dartmouth ahead 3-0.

With one minute left in the second period, Jones took the rebound off a Lovejoy shot from the point and got it past RPI netminder Jordan Alford to record Dartmouth's fifth goal of the contest. Glass added a power play goal of his own with less than three minutes left to play in the game.

When asked about the turnaround from Friday to Saturday, Glass said, "We didn't make many changes after the Union game. Our coaches did a great job with keeping everyone's spirits up and keeping a good attitude. This positive mentality allowed us to go into the RPI game a little more relaxed and confident."

Dartmouth battles four non-conference opponents in the next two weeks, starting on Saturday, Jan. 13 when the Big Green travel to the Verizon Center in Manchester to take on intra-state rival University of New Hampshire. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
