Still North and Intent

To the Editor:

I think I understand the intended purpose of Drew Lerman '10's comic decrying the tendency of some conservatives to accuse even the most reasonable, logical, and humane of academic writing and thought to be tainted by a liberal bias ("The Still North," Nov. 6). However, depicting the prelude to a sexual assault to make his point was inauspicious. It reminds sexual assault victims in our community of events they have worked so hard to put behind them, and it can be misinterpreted to validate and normalize the behavior of a small group of people on campus who seem to throw their morals to the wind when alcohol is involved. Some might argue that Lerman should not concern himself with the potential misreadings of his strip. However, the benefits of living in a close, intimate community are not free; they require each of us to be ever vigilant of the effects our actions can have on those around us. Lerman seems to have forgotten this truism when drafting Monday's comic.
