The D's relationship with the world

To the Editor:

I write to respectfully disagree with David

Glovsky '08 on the subject of covering international issues in The Dartmouth ("My Relationship with The D," Aug. 1).

Glovsky is right to note that our audience has more interest in Dartmouth, Hanover and Upper Valley news. Audience determines content, no contest. But The Dartmouth Opinion staff has more to offer than simply our views on Hanover news, as important as those might be.

Consider Glovsky's insistence that we read only the professional opinion writers -- who do you think these people are? I bet if you take a Dartmouth student, add some weight, a little facial hair (guys only), a pinch of self importance, and then wait about a decade, you'll have your professional writer, reporter or academic. (Warning: recipe not guaranteed to bring about intended results.)

These people are like us in many ways, which is why it should come as no surprise that our writers, too, have interesting opinions about world events. This is why I, for one, have enjoyed reading David Rothenberg '08 and Max Bryer '08 on the Middle East, Sara del Nido '08 and Deborah Wassel '07 on gender issues, and many others.

Yes, if you have no interesting thoughts about world events, then perhaps you should stick to discussing Hanover weather. But if you have an insightful opinion about the world around you, then by all means, let's hear it!
