Campus responsible for Big Green Bike failure

To the Editor:

I was dismayed to see Robert Butts' opinion response to the article about the Big Green Bikes program ("How Many Zaps Does it Take," April 13), in which the blame was placed squarely on the Student Assembly for failing to learn from the outcomes of past bike programs on campus.

While it is certainly prudent to ask why this experiment was repeated so many times, it's also important to ask why the Dartmouth student body cannot be trusted with communal bikes. Apathy toward a program that one feels is unnecessary is one thing, but theft and vandalism are indicative of a total lack of respect and responsibility.

I think that the Dartmouth community should be capable of attaining much higher ideals than these.
