Football Traditions, Old and New

To the Editor:

I was intrigued by the article on the new/old football tradition ("College revives ancient football game field-rushing tradition," Oct. 21). It should be noted, however, that the field-rushing tradition it means to replace is not "ancient" (it did not exist when I was at Dartmouth from 1991-95, except for a handful of people who thought it did, and usually got arrested) and that the phrase "'the Gauntlet,' referring to the shape the students take" implies that students will take the shape of a gauntlet. Instead I believe they will form parallel rows, creating a "gantlet" (no "u").
