Happy with Heintz

To the Editor:

As a Christian and a friend I would like to respectfully disagree with John Stern's assertion (Sept. 23) that "to portray Jesus as a pot-smoking, swearing hippie is highly inappropriate."

Ignoring the fact that hippies don't say "dawg," I'd like to say that it wasn't only the non-Christians who were offended by the speech. Having worked for the Church for the past couple years, I am deeply and personally hurt when Christians and Christianity are misrepresented in public.

I find it wholly appropriate for the image of Christ to be the one telling us to "chill the f*ck out." I find it wholly inappropriate for a Christian to warn others against sexual assault, rape, murder, and violence, when we have rapists in the pulpits, military officials killing in the name of Jesus and church leaders calling for the assassination of elected officials.

I'd like to join with the many who feel that Noah Riner '06 chose the wrong audience, but I'd like to add that there is still yet an audience that needs to hear his message.
