Dealing with Oversubscription

To the Editor:

Another new year at Dartmouth, more letters about class sizes, little change. I found the latest article with comments of a Tulane student on the Dartmouth course selection system telling.

A year ago, I wrote to President Wright, suggesting the he investigate the course "bidding" system used at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago. It is an efficient, fair and understandable way for students to get the classes they most need and want.

The UC GSB market approach is based on an initial point allocation, accumulation of points over one's student tenure and use of points to bid for courses.

In a school with a $2.5 billion endowment, it would seem a "no brainer" to add faculty in the oversubscribed departments. Short of that, I suggest that Dartmouth at least investigate the Chicago system.
