Whose Dear Old Dartmouth?

To the Editor:

Your Verbum Ultimum editorial of May 20 was more than a disappointment. By reprising the sad yammering of certain professors ("ideologically motivated", "nostalgia"), the D joined with the namecallers who see the world only in terms of left/right politics. You well know that my "Dear Old Dartmouth?" (Feb. 28) column to which you referred directly, argued that "I wish Dartmouth College to be known for good writing, continuity in dorm living, small classes with no waitlists, intimate libraries, free debate and vigorous sports teams who are able to train and play in modern facilities" -- all apolitical goals, to say the least.

Yet your editorial attacks the new trustees, older alumni, and me too, as if we had an unspoken, prehistoric "agenda:" an all-male, Indian-symbol Dartmouth.

Prehistory is the operative idea here. The College became coeducational in 1972 and since that time more than half of all living alums have graduated. Only a minority of alumni knew the old Dartmouth, and still fewer want to go back to it. Do you have even a shred of evidence to the contrary?
