To the Editor:
In reference to President Wright's recent webcast ("Wright aims to placate alumni with webcast," Jan. 28), I was not impressed, just the same kind of mush we have come to expect. I heard nothing in the way of accountability for the bottomless deterioration in the football program over the last seven years. That can only imply that the fault lies solely with John Lyons, which I don't believe for a moment. He went 10-0 in 1996 with his own recruits, and then went 8-2 the next season with a bunch of leftovers. It's not plausible that he forgot how to coach after that.
That leaves questions about the administration support he enjoyed, whether it's President Wright (whose term coincides with the decline of the program), Dean Furstenberg or the Athletic Department. Call me sexist if you must, but I'm not aware of any successful football program where the Athletic Director is female. The webcast would have benefited greatly from addressing what went wrong and why? Given the magnitude of the catastrophe, we deserve to know.
