To the Editor:
To clarify a point made in my previous op-ed ("Reasonable Religious Faith," Feb. 22), intelligent design is simply the idea, supported by empirical evidence, that random mutation and natural selection are insufficient to explain what we observe in our world. It absolutely does not affirm that the universe was made in six 24-hour days or that it is "a few thousand years old" as Nathaniel Paull states ("A Truce for Science and Religion," Feb. 23). Intelligent design deserves the serious consideration of the scientific community, which all too frequently denies other views a fair hearing, and dogmatically clings to a problematic, naturalistic/materialistic worldview.
