Assuring Health Comes First

To the Editor:

Julie Clemons' editorial titled "Being a True Good Samaritan" (Feb. 21) misses the point of the "Good Samaritan" policy. Clemons seems to let her views on binge drinking cloud her assessment of the policy. The policy is not for those who have drunk themselves stupid but instead for their friends.

I was in the unfortunate position of having to make a "Good Samaritan" call last term, and the knowledge that neither I nor the person who was drunk would get in trouble made my decision easy. I did not realize at the time that both of us could have, in fact, been reprimanded for the incident. Would I have made the call anyway? Yes. Would someone else have? I'm not sure, and that bothers me. Getting in trouble with the College should be the last thing on anyone's mind when the health of a friend is in question. If the College modifies their "Good Samaritan" policy to unconditionally protect the individuals involved, getting in trouble wouldn't even be a consideration.
