The Next Swarthmore?

To The Editor:

I was very disappointed, but not entirely surprised, by the news regarding Dean Furstenberg's comments regarding football, and athletics in general. I do not envy Josie Harper's position now of trying to recruit a football coach for the school with the challenge of presenting a group of undesirables before Furstenberg and his committee each year.

I suppose we are just lucky that Furstenberg has chosen to direct his bias towards mere athletes versus some other group of students on campus. (According to the the College's website, only 75 percent of students participate in athletics.?)

Maybe he's right though, maybe we should just forget Dartmouth's past and continue on the road to being the next Columbia -- or maybe even if we're lucky, Swarthmore. Wouldn't that be great, a school full of liberal bookworms who don't care a bit for their school or representing it. It's probably just a coincidence then that Homecoming weekend and Dartmouth Night, the time where school spirit is at its annual peak, fall on a football weekend in October.

Furstenberg needs to serve the school and the students' interests rather than his own. Otherwise, I'm afraid of how far down this road to mediocrity and sameness we will go.
