Giving All We Can

To the Editor:

A comment regarding the headline "TDX party collects $1,200 for tsunami victims," from Jan. 10: While all efforts to raise funds for relieving the hardships faced by those whose lives have been devastated by the Asian tsunami should be applauded, I feel the effort presented by TDX really misses the point on several levels.

First, though $1,200 is a respectable sum, it represents a paltry figure compared to both what is needed and what might be achievable from a student population that includes so many individuals from financially privileged families.

Secondly, though a party represents a good opportunity to ask large numbers of persons to donate to their effort, I would be curious to compare the amount of money spent on supplies for the event, particularly alcoholic beverages, with the amount of money that will be donated to the Mercy Group.

This is not meant to criticize the persons at TDX in any way but merely to illuminate the fact the we all can, and should, do all that we can to help those suffering after this global tragedy.
