Scare Tactics, Part One

To the Editor:

Janos Marton '04's observation ("Parkhurst: More of the Same," The Dartmouth, September 30) regarding the College springing social policy on the student body during the summer months, when enrollments (and thus reactions) are at their smallest and Greek leadership is least experienced, reminded me of the summer of 1999. The vague Student Life Initiative decree had just recently thundered down from Mount Parkhurst, but none of the subsequent trials and tribulations had yet been endured.

With little notice, CFS leadership learned that the Trustees would soon be visiting their houses for physical plant inspections. I'll never forget peering out the windows in Heorot's Great Hall to see (in)famous Trustee Susan Dentzer '77 march up the walkway, which had recently been swept for the first time in the building's history. Fisher Price's My First Greek Leadership Experience had begun.

Although cordial and respectful, Dentzer was as awkward observing our house as we were presenting it. First time house buyer meets first time house owner. Entering the basement, I think she might have dry-heaved. Her next stop was AD. I remember thinking she'd need the underrated Trustee "boot and rally" to get through that one.
