To the Editor:
While I agree that Kwame Spearman's column was really stupid, don't you think all the jokes about Columbia's location are a tad racist? Saying that Columbia students fall asleep to the sounds of gunshots and sirens has no basis in fact other than the fact that Morningside Heights borders an area that is predominantly black. Characterizing an area that was responsible for a major cultural renaissance by saying it's nothing but gun fights is pretty offensive to me and other students of color.
On a slightly lighter note: I wouldn't have brought up the famous alumni issue, and I really wouldn't have shown my ignorance by being unable to come up with a famous Columbia alum. While we may have Dr. Seuss, three of the country's founders, including Alexander Hamilton (he's the creator of American capitalism) did go to Columbia. I wouldn't broach the alumni issue.
But seriously, there's a reason Dartmouth is considered a racist school.
