To the Editor:
After reading Ben Zimmerman's article, "Ceremony celebrates athletic achievement," (The Dartmouth, May 25) one might be under the impression that the Celebration of Excellence was designed in large part to honor Elliot Olshansky for his dedication to Dartmouth athletics as both a fan and a sportswriter for the Dartmouth. Zimmerman's article begins with what amounts to a simple listing of athlete award winners, before focusing solely on Olshansky in the second half of the brief article. While Olshansky's recognition was certainly a lovely gesture on the part of the athletic department, it in no way overshadowed the celebration of extraordinary athletic and scholastic achievements on the part of our student athletes over the past year.
Forgive me this bit of speculation, but had Olshansky, the superfan himself, written the article, I suspect it would have focused a great deal more on the athletes and their tremendous accomplishments, and less on someone committed to supporting and reporting them.
