Rush Isn't A Competition

To the Editor:

We would like to express our thanks to The Dartmouth for the newfound interest they have shown in Panhell and in the Greek system as a whole ("76 women receive sorority acceptance," April 16). However, recruitment (a.k.a. rush) is a complex process, which is difficult to fully portray in a few short articles. Although these articles have been generally informative, there are a few points upon which we would like to elaborate.

Recruitment may seem to be a competition among the sororities for the allegiance of the new members, but this is not the case. While each individual sorority is concerned with making themselves as attractive as possible to potential new members, we are much more concerned with placing each girl in the house in which she fits best. It benefits the entire system for each girl to be placed in a house where she will be happiest and most comfortable; consequently, we all work together to make sure that this is accomplished as often as possible.

This spring recruitment was very successful; not only were more girls included than is normal for Spring term, but there was also a high success rate of matching girls with their preferred sororities. Overall, everyone involved in the recruitment process, both the new members and all of the sororities, are very happy with the results of this term's recruitment. More girls have joined houses this spring than we had hoped and all the sororities are really excited to incorporate new members into their sisterhoods. Thanks for taking such an interest in the system.
