This weekend marks the return of legendary Hollywood sceenwriter Budd Schulberg '36 to Dartmouth. Beginning April 15, Schulberg will be on campus to screen two of his most famous films, "On The Waterfront" and "A Face In The Crowd," as well as his new documentary, "Budd Schulberg: A Contender."
Schulberg has had quite an eclectic career and life. The son of the Paramount Studios production head, Schulberg spent his youth in Hollywood. His first cinematic endeavor after graduating was a collaborative effort with F. Scott Fitzgerald in making a film in Hanover about Winter Carnival.
Schulberg is also the only man in the Boxing Hall of Fame who is not actually a boxer, as he was inducted for his documentary work. As well as being prolific in celluloid, he is a writer. One of his novels, "What Makes Sammy Run?," has been made into a play and several films. Currently, Ben Stiller is trying to gain the rights to the celebrated piece for another adaptation.
After so many interesting endeavors and fascinating experiences, Schulberg now returns to Dartmouth to share some of his best work with today's students. The weekend's events will culminate in Schulberg receiving the 46th Dartmouth Film Award.
