Alumni Representation on the Board of Trustees

To the Editor:

Your April 1 article, "From outside, Rodgers campaigns on change," contains an error that needs to be corrected. The article incorrectly asserts that the proposed joint constitution of the Dartmouth Alumni Council and the Dartmouth Association of Alumni "would have restricted alumni voting rights for alumni trustees from Dartmouth's 62,000 graduates to a few hundred council members."

The proposed constitution, which was defeated in December by a slim margin, maintained alumni voting rights for alumni trustees. It also reaffirmed the petition process under which T.J. Rodgers is running. There was little or no discussion on the process by which alumni elect trustees, as the discussion focused on alumni governance issues.

The ability to elect alumni trustees is a great privilege for Dartmouth alumni, and I know of no effort to restrict it.

In fact, when the Dartmouth Trustees recently voted to expand Dartmouth's board, they maintained the 50-50 balance between alumni-elected trustees and charter trustees.

This will enable alumni to elect 10 sitting trustees when the board expands, up from the current seven.

I urge all alumni to evaluate all four candidates and to vote for the one that you believe will best serve Dartmouth over the next decade. The voting ends on May 8, 2004.
