Power to Free Speech

To the Editors:

I was shocked and appalled at the things I read in the article "College Grapples With Meaning of 'Bias'" (The Dartmouth, March 5).

In it, the reader learns that Tommy Woon, Dean of Student Life for Pluralism and Leadership, has a task force dedicated to fighting against offensive messages. Yet, this same Mr. Woon claims to be a proponent of free speech!

Thomas Jefferson said quite correctly that rightful liberty is bounded only by the equal liberty of others. Yet clearly putting up posters does not rob anyone of his liberties. Therefore, it is well within the bounds of rightful liberty.

Nowhere should the candid expression of opinions -- no matter how they make people feel -- be more cherished than at Dartmouth. If Dartmouth really cares about fostering diversity, it should foster the most important kind of diversity of all: diversity of thought, point of view and expression.
