To the Editors:
In the article "Discussion Addresses 'Forgotten Histories'," (The Dartmouth, Feb. 20) it is reported that "The event was held in honor of Black History Month and Japanese-American Internment Day of Remembrance. Rep. Mike Honda, D-Calif., sponsored the 2003 bill that established Feb. 19 as a day of remembrance in honor of the 120,000 Japanese-Americans forced into concentration camps during World War II." This is only part of the story. Congressman Honda's resolution states: "Supporting the goals of the Japanese American, German American and Italian American communities in recognizing a National Day of Remembrance to increase public awareness of the events surrounding the restriction, exclusion, and internment of individuals and families during World War II."
It is unfortunate that so many scholars and History professors like Takeshita who said, "All too often these are the types of histories that are left out of the history books. If you know the stories, you step in and share the history." Professor Takeshita should heed is own advice.
