SA forges plans for Lone Pine

Prompted by student input from a Student Assembly campus-wide BlitzMail survey, Student Body President Janos Marton '04 has joined forces with Dartmouth Dining Services and the Collis Center in an attempt to cater to students' eating demands.

Based on 610 student responses, the survey results indicated that a noticeable majority of students prefer a late-night snack-food option upstairs in Collis rather than downstairs.

However, Lone Pine Tavern's loyal customers should not fret, the survey said.

The report concluded that a compromise between a modified Lone Pine Tavern and a modified Big Green Bean would be reached. While a Tavern-type venue would be open on "social nights," including Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, a Collis Caf option would be available at night on Sunday through Thursday.

Director of Dining Services Tucker Rossiter emphasized that the upstairs venue would not be the same as what the Big Green Bean was in the past.

The new system would use the caf portion of Collis as a self-serve area, requiring less overall staffing, and would provide smoothies, coffee drinks and pastries.

"It's a step in the right direction to where we want to be long-term, if enough students participate. We'd really like to have a positive effect to attract a larger student following," Rossiter said.

Likewise, Marton said he was pleased with the survey results.

"DDS is trying to provide the maximum number of options for students to make life as vibrant as possible, and we are working to find a solution that works for everyone," he said.

The survey results also show that a majority of students do not care if waiters serve them in the venue, nor do they care if live entertainment is included in the late night option.

In addition, the report states that an overwhelming number of students said that the option of alcoholic beverages would not affect their decision to go to this venue.

Rossiter said that the venues have been slated to open at the beginning of next term.
