At What Price, Long Distance?

To the Editor:

In The Dartmouth's recent piece, "College Removes Long-Distance Fee," (July 7,2003) I was surprised to learn that long-distance service will be provided free of charge, "like it does internet service, electricity and other utilities." Maybe standard protocol has changed since I last attended, but I seem to remember these utilities falling under the roughly $35,000 our parents were charged each year. If the college will commit to a halt in tuition increases next year than I will concede long distance to be a truly free service and us skeptics might buy into the College's claims of charity and benevolence.
