To the Editor:
The April 16 article "In South Pacific, students aid ailing education system" describes an excellent program that reminds us of the old days when the U.S. Peace Corp Volunteers Program was active in the Marshall Islands (from early 1960s to the mid 1980s).
Young Americans used to descend in fairly large numbers during those years to teach mainly English and mathematics throughout the islands. I still can remember an American lady who taught our seventh grade class on Namodrik Atoll back in 1979-1980. I can't remember her name now but she did an excellent job in introducing many of us in the class to the English language.
I am sure this program will surely touch many young Marshallese pupils and open their eyes to what appears to be Earth's universal language. My commendation is extended to the coordinator and to the young American enthusiastic teachers. Good luck.
