Considering Both Sides

To the Editor:

My wife and I read with interest Professor Swayne's April 3 editorial "Tacit Intolerance," which offers a critical review of our new book, "A Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality."

Professor Swayne calls for an open debate on the question of homosexuality -- a call that we wholly support. Indeed, we hope to establish a debate on college campuses throughout the country as long as the debate is civil and respectful of both sides' right to be heard. Unfortunately, in the past, formerly homosexual men and women have been harassed, booed and even denied the right to speak on college campuses because gay-activist groups don't want them to have a public platform.

Shouldn't ideological diversity be welcomed in the same manner as racial and cultural diversity? We think it should.

Many people have left gay lifestyles behind by developing their latent heterosexuality and diminishing their unwanted homosexual attractions. The web site of the National Association of Research and Therapy for Homosexuality (NARTH) features dozens of articles about this process. We hope the students at Dartmouth will take our challenge to visit this website to learn more about the ex-gay community and the change process.
