To the Editor:
I'd like to draw your readership's attention to a significant distinction between The Native American Studies Program and the Native American Program at Dartmouth. The Native American Studies Program is an interdisciplinary academic program offering both a major and a minor and it operates just as any other academic program or department at the College does.
The Native American Program is an administrative office in the Student Life area of the Dean of the College supporting the cultural, personal and academic lives of students as they relate to things Native American. In the April 9, edition of The Dartmouth, I was identified as the "Director of the Native American Studies Program" in the story on page two, "Assembly considers controversial mascot," but I am Director of the Native American Program in Student Life. While it's flattering to be considered the head of a nationally known academic program such as Native American Studies, I must make your readership aware that I am in a very different position.
