Stand-up comedian Lewis Black tops the bill of the acts the Programming Board was able to book for the 2003 winter season. The comic will bring his angry brand of humor to Spaulding Auditorium on March 6.
Famous for his furious rants on current events, Black is best known for his weekly "Back in Black" segment on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." Additionally, he has served as a regular on NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," has had two "Comedy Central Presents" specials and has appeared in such movies as "Hannah and Her Sisters" and "Jacob's Ladder."
Black is also a graduate of the Yale Drama School who has written over 40 plays produced worldwide. Between his "Daily Show" duties and his writing, Black still performs his politically charged stand-up routine. Even after the events of Sept. 11, he has remained one of President Bush's most outspoken critics in the comedy world.
Notably absent is a concert at Leede Arena. Whereas Dartmouth has brought in bigger named bands like the Counting Crows, Guster and The Roots in recent terms, there will be no such performance this winter. Asked why, Programming Board representative Matt Oppenheimer '05 said, "The dates the Athletic Department gave us to use Leede and the tour dates of the bands that PB wanted to come to Dartmouth did not overlap."
Also lined up to come to Spaulding this term is Medeski, Martin and Wood. The critically acclaimed acoustic jazz fusion trio will perform Feb. 18. Featuring keyboards, drums and bass, the band is on jazz's cutting edge, combining traditional groove-based jazz with more modern improvisation.
Based in New York, the group has seen a steady growth in their audience over their 11 year history, partly due to their collaborations with more well-known artists like Phish and DJ Logic. The band just recently put the finishing touches on their 12th album "Uninvisible," which is slated for an April 9 release.
Coming to Collis Commonground this Friday is Virginia Coalition. A darling of the jam band scene, the group's popularity spread rapidly over the past year, as they have filled such sizable venues as Washington D.C.'s 9:30 Club and Boston's Paradise. They even made it into the Billboard Magazine this week, coming in at #18 on the Top Internet Sales Chart for the first week sales of their new album "Rock & Roll Party."
Also coming to The Hill this term are Nashville singer-songwriters Jennifer Daniels and Adam Richman, who will both play the Big Green Bean on Feb. 19. and 26, respectively.
