To the Editor:
Collegiate swimming in the United States is under assault. When I started coaching at the collegiate level almost 30 years ago, there were over 350 Division I Men's Swimming programs. Now only 149 or less exist! For a sport that was the forerunner in gender equity when in the 50s and 60s men and women trained together at a time when no other athletic teams did, it is a crime that the dropping of collegiate swim teams continue. Swimmers are among the best college athletes in grade point average, graduation rates and winning Olympic medals. When will this madness stop?
