Paying Respect

To the Editor:

As a grandchild of two World War II veterans, an American and a liberal, I was disheartened and embarrassed to see a poor turnout to the Veterans' Day service in a Tuck auditorium on Nov. 11. While many of us on campus may be critical of our President's "with us or against us" brand of patriotism, we can never hope to be an effective voice for reform if we disregard the sacrifices of those before us.

As a proponent of nonviolence, I have an equal respect for any human life, whether it's one spared because war was avoided or one lost in the service of our country.

Veterans' Day at Dartmouth should not be reserved for Tuck students and the ROTC. No one proves anything by scoffing at a day of remembrance.
