To the Editor:
As president of Dartmouth Hillel, I would like to join the staff of the Rockefeller Center in condemning the appalling act of vandalism that took place in Hinman Forum this past weekend. I am committed to creating a campus atmosphere that frees all groups from the bonds of intimidation and hatred. The swastika, an indisputable sign of hatred and murder, is also a personal reminder of the Holocaust to Jews and other minority groups. It is a sign of intolerance and hatred and will not be tolerated in our community.
While this horrific act is the work of one, its implications affect the entire Dartmouth community. We should take away from this incident a resolution to purge these feelings of hatred from our campus and to create the tolerant environment that we all seek.
I am convinced that the students, faculty and staff of Dartmouth will join me in continuing to foster a campus community void of hatred for any group. These acts of violence, while isolated, have been a regularity on our campus in the past. While I do not see them as a sign of growing intolerance, I recognize that there is still progress to be made.
Let us continue on our path of making Dartmouth the place we desire and join forces to keep hatred out of our way of life.
