To the Editor:
Concerning William Dowling's Article on athletic "set-asides," my short response is, "Divison III, anyone?" Dartmouth's move in this direction would keep relatively high standards and still put interesting teams on the field, court or rink, etc. (And thoroughly frighten the Amherst, Williams, Middlebury etc. athletic departments, but that's another story.)
But the 1960s are long gone and even Division III teams recruit. For example, my daughter's paid campus job at another Division III school involved contact with lacrosse-playing applicants to encourage enrollment. Hey, her alma mater even won their division this spring! Alas, real purity is hard to come by these days.
