Spirit for the South

To the Editor:

I found your article about bringing the South north very interesting ("Society Celebrates Southern Culture."July 30). As a teenager, I moved from my Indiana home to Charleston, South Carolina. Ten years later, I moved to New England, where I have lived and raised my family. I fully understand the views of the two students from the South. However, it is my opinion that the South is best experienced by living or at least visiting there.

As a resident of the Charleston area, I was frequently referred to as a "yankee" and chided for my northern accent. While in truth, it didn't bother me, it just made me realize that the South was a place of strong tradition and belief, antebellum for the most part, a part of which I would never be.
