To the Editor:
The perpetrators of the unspeakable crime committed against the Zantops have been found, convicted and sentenced. Justice has been served, and, as College President James Wright said, the Dartmouth community is deeply appreciative of the work of local law enforcement agencies and of the Attorney General's office. Yet, I cannot go as far as claiming that the case has been brought to resolution. Without having had the benefit of following a full trial, where the salient facts and evidence would have been exposed, we will never quite know what was the motive behind these murders. There have been mentions in newspapers that the murders were intentional and for the purpose of obtaining money for a flight to a distant land, but this has not been proven. Was it then the real motive? Also, we remain in the dark about why the Zantops, as opposed to other Hanover residents, were the targets. Lacking these answers and, now lacking the hope that the answers will ever see the light of day, casts, in my opinion, a perpetual veil of uncertainty on the case. No, there has not been closure and there never will be. The College and the Town of Hanover are left to wonder.
